Immersive Parallax Platformer in Articulate Storyline

Gamified training for developers and games designers.

This project was featured in Issue 9 of Dirtyword – The E-Learning Magazine, in an article titled “Pushing the Edge.”

Overview

I was tasked with designing mandatory training on finance policies for software developers and games designers at Bede Gaming. Instead of a traditional slideshow, I created a sidescrolling platformer in Articulate Storyline. Learners explore a wizarding village, completing quests that reflect real policy actions—earning coins, managing energy, and navigating a branching narrative.

Technical highlights:

  • JavaScript-powered parallax movement system

  • Seamless wide-format background video with layered transparent PNGs

  • Responsive to screen resizing and device dimensions

  • Inventory system for managing collected items and in-game purchases

  • Branching feedback paths based on learner decisions and interactions

  • Custom scripting to track player position, trigger events, and manage HUD

  • Level reset system that restores variables and object positions when a game over state is triggered
