The benefits of pet insurance

An interactive scenario driven experience with gamified elements.

Overview

This short module for learners detailing the benefits of pet insurance was developed in order to showcase the possibilities for rapid development of gamified learning. This project was realised in a single weekend.

  • Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design

  • Target Audience: Customer Managers at a multi national insurance company

  • Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Vyond, Camtasia, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop

The Process

Timescales for production of the module were short, so in order to work effectively I employed the principles of instructional design to establish an overview of the result I wanted to achieve. Rather than simply present facts for learner consumption I wanted to produce a module that enabled the learner to exercise knowledge in scenarios which were relevant to the role the learner will perform.

Storyboard

To produce content efficiently I produced a basic storyboard outlining the key paths of each scenario. As the nature of this project was largely conceptual, I did not have to quote any specific information or consult an SME but I reviewed the products offered by a range of insurers to gain an understanding of how they would function, so that the scenarios would be somewhat realistic and engaging for my audience.

I sought feedback from my peers to ensure that the structure I was looking to produce was clear and logical.

Visual Mockups

Prior to beginning any build I produced mockups to ensure that the colours and visual elements I had chosen would work well together. I also needed to consider how I would communicate key information to the user such as their current number of lives and the presence of a ‘help’ button. I decided to condense the area the user would interact with during a scenario within the format of a smartphone, as the visual layout of these devices is quite well understood. In this way the learner would be able to interact wit the scenario instinctively as if they were playing a mobile game.

Interactive Prototype and Development

Once I had finalised the visual design, I produced a prototype, consisting of one single question to determine that the functionality was sound and that no unintended behaviour was exhibited. It was important that this was tested as thoroughly as possible within the time allowed before any duplication for use by the other questions.

Results and Takeaways

The final product was well received by my audience. This was also due to my ability to communicate my decision making and explain why I had made the choices I had made in order to deliver a product within the specified timescale.
